Hi Tim
Two interesting points here, the heavy soil and the acidity. Dealing
with the second one first, I wonder if a touch of lime would make it
happier. I know the culinary onions for instance have a fondness for a
fairly high pH.
As to the heavy soil. My soil is really quite light, but I had a friend
who for many years gardened on an even lighter one down near th sea and
while some bulbs are hard to grow for me, some of these same species
multiplied in her soil in a quite uncontrollable fashion. With a few it
was a case of her furnishing me with her overflow and them just fading
away in my garden over a couple of years, even though the gardens were a
scant five miles apart. we always thought the main differnce was the
soil.
However, as I hope to start growing this soon, I am making a note of its
liking for shade and revising my ideas of where to put it.
