Re: Madonna lily hybrids

Trevor:

Well, hot dog!

I checked my "Index of Garden Plants" and noted that
Lilium x testaceum is, as YOU know, a hybrid between
-- get this -- Lilium candidum (as noted here) and
Lilium chalcedonicum (one of those other
almost-Mediterranean lilies)!

It's known as "Nankeen Lily" (odd, I thought "Nankeen"
was an Asian reference). It has a turk's-cap flower
(like its chalcedonicum parent), it's scented (!), and
it's "yellow to pale orange with interior spotted
red". I see no reference in "IoGP" to cultivars or
selections.

I did, however, find a picture of it in "Bulbs" by
Phillips and Rix. The flower illustrated is a soft
cream and VERY beautiful. This pale selection gives
me the impression that more than one color form is/was
available. This book also notes that "it is one of
the oldest lily hybrids in cultivation being recorded
before 1841"

It is good to know, Trevor, that someone is making
efforts to reproduce the cross. I wonder if it is
genetically compatible with some of our California
species; it might make for some exciting -- and
appropriate hybrids.

Thanks,
Joe Seals
