The Nankeen referes to a yellow dye colour peculiar to that Chinese city -
presumably a sort of soft, buff colour.
As for their compatibility with the West Coast lilies I recall from
Woodcroft & Stern that the ploidies are very different, tho' that is not to
say these couldn't be artificially altered and fertilisation induced.
Incidentally, I grow one West Coast lily not often seen - Lilium pitkinense
that I believe is now extinct in its habitat, due to the Pitkin Swamp being
drained and built over. It grows well in a shady cool SE facing border under the
eaves of the house. The soil is filled with tree fern roots but the lily doesn't
seem to mind.
