Re: "Black Parsley"

I have this plant in the garden for a little over a
year now, and it bloomed this early spring, and is now
setting seed. I have yet to find out whether it will
act as a monocarpic annual or live on another year. I
suspect having left the seed to ripen lessens my
chances of it living on.

I wonder at the common name-Black Parsley, as there is
nothing black about the plant. It does get quite
large, so give it room, and it seems equally adaptable
to part shade or full sun. The leaves can expand to
almost 3 feet across, and the trunk can get 2 inches
thick and 5 feet tall, or at least it did in my
garden. The flowers are showy and pale pink, and
fragrant, in large carrot flower type umbels that can
be almost 2 to 3 feet across. Do you get the idea yet
that this plant needs some space to look its best?
The new foliage has beautiful bronzy tints, and was
most actively growing in the cooler winter months.

Annie Hayes of Annie's Annuals first introduced me to
this plant, and she has a large new crop coming along
for those who might be interested in trying this
plant, check out her next weekend open house on the
weekend of July 20/21, (confirm dates at
www.anniesannuals.com) As always, she has lots of
other interesting things as well, and I was pleasantly
surprised to find Aristea major being grown, and to
have been introduced to Shoofly/Nicandra physaloides,
a beautiful tender perennial from Peru with lovely
showy lavender/blue flowers and interesting seed
heads, reaching 4 feet tall by across for late spring
thru fall bloom.
