Hi Nan,
We did a nursery roadtrip after the Pasadena general meeting of the Medit Garden
Society last fall. It took us two days to get home to San Jose. We had a
wonderful time and only bought a dozen or so plants. :-)
Here's where we stopped (with suggestions from alot of people):
Nuccio's in Altadena - camellia heaven
Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge - great rose garden and nice natives
too
Theodore Payne in Sun Valley - beautiful native selection and seeds - hard to
find place but worth it
Chia in Carpenteria - recently moved north with a large demo garden in front
Turk Hessalund in Montecito - talk with the owner. Fun place.
Windmill in Solvang west of 101 - regular nursery
Las Pilitas - Wow! Off the road a ways but worth every mile.
Bay Laurel Nursery in Atascadero - great selection of medit plants and fruit
trees
A visit with Charles Dills in San Luis Obispo was very nice. He's charming and
his greenhouse is wonderful.
More ideas:
Bonfante Gardens in Gilroy is worth at least half a day. It's a very special
place with beautiful gardens, the 'circus trees' of Axel Erlandson and the life
dream of Michael Bonfante who spent millions on the botanical theme park. Take
a look at www.bonfantegardens.com
Sierra Azul is wonderful with the large demonstration garden. Jeff Rosendale
has built mounds that provide great drainage and work really well for showing
off all the plants. West on 152 from 101. Worth every mile.
Gamble Gardens in Palo Alto - you'll see this on Friday if you go on the tour.
If not, be sure to visit it. Open to the public free.
Cheers,
Bracey
