The answer to both your queries is "yes". Put it close to your house foundations and I doubt any burglar could get near you!

Personally I have always thought it rather ugly and threatening and would not own one even if my climate would allow.

But Moira!  There are lovely sanseverias with fabulous patterns on them, some pale green with leopard spots and broad leaves, others with burgundy colored margins.
