Re: Plectranthus amboinicus

Hello all,
I am totally enamored with my variegated Plectranthus amboinicus or Spanish thyme/Cuban oregano. I got this plant from Mountain Valley Growers and it started out at the beginning of May as a tiny three leaved plant in a three inch pot. The stems are brittle and I broke a couple off taking it from its package when it arrived. I put it in the ground in a sunny location that gets a bit of filtered shade in the afternoon. It is now about one square foot. What a beautiful plant and such a wonderful fragrance when you gently rub a leaf between your fingers. I can't wait to use it in cooking -- if I can bare to cut a leaf from the plant. It is borderline in my zone 9, so I plan to cover it if we get any frost this coming winter.
Alas, any Plectranthus is just to tender for me to grow here in my garden except under cover. There were a number of beautiful native species in East Africa where I had no such constraint. Some of these I remember were not creeping forms but substantial bushes.
