Yes. I think of it as a train set that runs on water. I have the same sort
of fun with it, and like a train set it also needs a fair amount of
tinkering (when it's as complicated as mine -- 12 zones).

It's nice that I could help you with that realization, and I agree with you
about putting the right plant in the right place, and then choosing the best
method of delivering the water needed (if any).
And thanks for your concern about my decision-making process, but let me
reassure you that my choice of drip was a very well considered decision
based on, among other factors:
--My local microclimate
--My local soil
--The fairly extreme slope of the yard
--The types of plants I'm trying to grow
--How much time I have available
--40+ years of experience gardening and watering in southern and northern
California, including use of rain birds, sprayers, misters, bubblers, drip,
etc.
