A friend asked me to try my hand at propagating the intergeneric Fremontia/Monkey hand tree cross, Chiranthodendron x Fremondodendron. The Chranthodendron is Chiranthodendron pendactylon. Amazingly the are both in the bird of paradise family! If you haven't seen the resulting plant, it is an odd but beautiful and fascinating tall, pyramidal tree with leaves like fremontia and flowers shaped more like monkey hand flowers but bright gold like the Fremontia. The cross is more cold hardy than monkey hand (which I covet but my garden proved too cold for it). See a photo of leaves and flowers at http://www.flickr.com/photos/creekrunningnorth/121525261/in/photostream/ or at http://ohric.ucdavis.edu/photos/fullsize/X_Chiranthofremontia_lenzii.jpg) From what I've read, largely on the Native Sons website long ago, the cross is a fairly shallow rooted tree that has been known to blow over in high winds. But what the heck, I'm a plant nerd so that doesn't concern me too much. Anyway, I'm looking for advice on making cuttings - What time of year? Which wood? What propagation methods seem to work best? Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks Nan ***************************************** Nan Sterman Plant Soup, Inc.
