Yes, we have single file Eucalpyt windbreak hedges too, often pollarded every 50 yrs or so, and we have Leland and Marcrocarpa cypresses too. Most of all sorts are now 100 yrs plus old and with the drought/ climate chnage and senility many are falling over and causing huge problems for farmers and home owners. Last autumn I drove acroos the SE of Australia from Adelaide via Mt Gambier to Ballarat - Castlemaine - Bendigo - Beechworth - Yackendanadah and there were thousands of dead and dying wind breaks of this age. It was a very sad sight to see.

I haven't seen this sort of windbreak used in California, but it sounds very
interesting. Kind of like a hedge-in-depth. I think the conditions aren't
severe enough to require that in most of California, but it sounds like it
would be attractive anyway.
In the places where I've seen single-line-of-tree windbreaks here, they
appear to work fairly well, and ironically the trees are usually Eucalyptus.
