Doug McClure asks about Southern California sources for Anigozanthus---
San Marcos Growers is closer to Southern California, rather than Northern.
It is a wholesale grower. You can access their web site at
www.smgrowers.com and look at their plant list. If you see something you
like, I'm sure there will be at least one local nursery that will special
order for you. (IMHO, it's a great source for all kinds of plants and I've
spent a lot of time at their web site -- really helped me get my phormiums
straight.)
Berkeley Hort Nursery up here just got three 'Bob and Blanche's' wedding
for me by special order from SAn Marcos. It's quite a lovely, multi-colored
anigozanthus, somewhat shorter than others. I believe that Randy Baldwin,
manager at San Marcos, said the name refers to the prime minister of
Australia upon the occasion of his wedding. Or some such story. Ernie
Wasson (of Berkeley Hort) and I have gotten to joking about it and say
there should be a companion plant of a different color named such and so's
divorce (like Charles and Di, maybe?) Sorry, it's late and I've been at
Planning Commission listening to public testimony for hours. Brain is
fried.
