Tree tubes for the use described by Jane are widely used in Southern
California to resist the chewing of young trees by gophers and ground
squirrels. They are also used for the protection of young citrus and
avocado form the sun. They come in various designs. I use them myself and
mine are a form of plastic spiral that stretches around the tree and
stretch as the tree grows. I purchased them for less than a dollar each
through a local nursery supply store. They are also widely advertised in
mail order catalogs.
