Just a note from a former Santa Barbaran:


Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden (fondly referred to as Alice Keck Park
Park) is a wonderful city-run garden very close to downtown.  Check out
the huge <italic>Laurus nobilis</italic> on one border.  They had a lot
of fun in the newspaper when someone "dumped" piranhas in the pond and
the park employees had a heck of a time getting them out again.


Another nice display is around the courthouse on Anapamu and Santa
Barbara streets (a frequent stop of horticulturally oriented tour groups)
and an architecturally interesting building to boot.


If you have the opportunity (with advance reservations) try to visit
Ganna Walska Lotusland in Montecito.  Call ahead at 805-969-3767. 
Admission is $10 for adults.  It's a former estate of Madame Ganna Walska
with 24 acres under cultivation out of a total of 37.  The gardens are
fabulous, some whimsical (abalone shells glued together as if they were
bivalves to line the border of a pool!), some more serious, and they have
an excellent collection of cycads.
