Gary's memorial

Yesterday evening's memorial for Gary Matson and his partner Winfield Mowder
was held under the trees at Caldwell Park along the Sacramento River, in
front of the children's natural history museum Gary founded twenty years
ago.
Several hundred people attended, and a dozen or so spoke, remembering Gary
and Winfield with poetry, funny and poignant stories, and admiration for
their community involvement and passion for the natural world and our
relationship to it. Seeds and cuttings were given to the people to came, to
grow and remember them by.
I did not know just how remarkable Gary and Winfield were. Gary started the
local farmer's market in the 1970's, Carter House children's museum and the
local Arboretum on the river.
Contributions can be made to the Clea Matson scholarship fund, c/o
Mid-Valley Bank, 1255 East St., Suite 101, Redding, CA 96001 (USA). Clea,
Gary's daughter, is a nineteen year old college student.
