Re: Philadelphus mexicana or lewisii?

I have P. lewisii growing in my garden, and see it frequently in the
foothills of northern California. Most of the wild plants are in the 6-10
foot tall range. Mine is about five feet tall but has only been in the
ground 3 years. They are relatively open-branching and cast a dappled
shade. In this part of their range they usually grow best with some
afternoon shade. In the wild they are usually on rocky slopes, sloping
forest edges--places with good drainage. I have mine in a raised bed under
blue oaks (Q. douglasii) next to a smalll pond and a bench. The flowers
were lovely and lasted several weeks in May.
