California live oak disease

There have been recent television reports of thousands of San Francisco
Bay area Californaia live oaks and tan oaks (were they referring to
Lithocarpus?) suddenly dying. Does anyone here know if this is the
appearance of Ceratocystis fagacearum in California for the first time
(oak wilt fungus) or if this is the typical uninformed hysteria on the
part of television's so-called journalists? Interestingly, the
television stories made no mention of oak wilt disease in the midwest
and south of the country, where it is aparently common in Quercus
virginiana and red oaks. Is this the first reported incidence in
Querqus agrifolia? From our european members, does this fungus disease
occur there?
