Re: low maintenance

Bill--I've had very good luck with a combination of Artemisia "Powis
Castle", rosemary "Tuscan Blue", bearded irises, and narcissus. The deer
bypass all of them to head for the roses and the morning glory, & none has
been lost to the gopher herd here. The first two get watered once or twice
during our very hot summers, the latter two get rained on and that's it.
The Artemisia looks great from April until December. Rosemary gets a little
tired looking by the middle of summer; bearded irises look ratty from June
on with no water (they are under oaks); narcissus of various kinds are
fantastic for several months and then gradually vanish. OK, none of these
is very exciting or new, but they are my cast-iron stanbys. I admire any
plant that can survive this climate with no pampering.
