Dave - I'm getting confused between private messages and list ones!
but worth saying, perhaps, that: my inclination is to feel that the
diffs. we've been recording suggest merely variations inside the sp,
no doubt depending on where seed was originally acquired. Agree
entirely about the beauty of the bark, BTW. As to hardiness and
permanence outside here: permanence a relative term! Ie, it survives
several winters. 95/6 saw my original specimen off and
subsequent-generation three-year-olds are now about flowering size -
if not this year then next. I only discovered its relative hardiness
by sheer carelessness, of course - simply forgot the original specimen
in its pot in a sheltered corner one autumn and only rediscovered it
when I saw it in flower! Thus encouraged I bunged it in the ground, in
said sheltered corner, and it survived for several (I think five)
winters. So I reckon it will take a run of average west coast winters
even this far north quite comfortably - -3C causes it no problem at
all.
