Re: mulch

What is the group-wisdom on pine-needles used as mulch?
I have been prevented from using them even though we have plenty on our
grounds because local folk wisdom (Greek) has it that it leaches into
the soil and kills everything around it.  The same goes for Cypress
sheddings.
Any useful arguments that I can counter this with?
Also: can (dry) seaweed be used as mulch directly from the beach or does
it need to stay out in the rain to be rinsed of salt?  If so, for how
long?
At this point and on behalf (I assume) of all enthusiastic amateurs on
the list I would like to thank all you wise professionals and scholars
who have been taking such pains to answer our often naive and elementary
questions and educate us.  I hope the pleasure of "busman's holiday" are
reward enough, combined with our gratitude.
