Dear Friends, 06/13/00
We'll we've achieved the impossible once again-we're the first people to bloom
this most drought-tolerant of plants in the Bay Area and are very excited.
We have occasionally seen plants for sale in So Cal at $ 30. for a one gallon.
No seed list from NZ lists them and the planmt is an endangered species.
They grow easily from seed and belong in formal containers or elegant
Mediterranean borders,
The foliage is like a giant sized bearded iris and the flowers are 6-12
diagonal racemes of brilliant red stamens. I just happened to read an essay
by a woman whose had them in her family for more than 100 years. They are
almost epiphytes which grown on rocks aty the sea in one acre or so of NZ's
western shore where they are often innundated with marine water.
They are hardy to 30F. We will be selling them to people on this
list and at Cal Hort at
3 seeds for $5.00 plus postage and handling.
Look them up and you'll surely want to try them as they are most decorative
and we found easy to grow and they produce abundant seed. These seed are
from two clones which we grew from seed and which bloomed in their 5th year
with absolute neglect. They are stately out of bloom and gorgeous in bloom.
We're starting a list and will be mailing seed in the next month. to order
contact us by Email and include your snail mail address. Each packet will
come with germinating instructions and culture information.
You are unlikely to see them offered as seed again---so join the fun.
Regards, Karoline & Michael D. Barclay
