Whenever I am replanting on a site where I have removed a sick plant I
try to dig out at least a bucketful of the soil and replace it with
fresh and hopefully clean soil or with a mixture of soil and mature
compost. Good live compost very often contains organisms which will
help deal with soil pathogens.
I know of no method of sterilizing soil in situ which does not involve
some nasty chemical.
