Re: plants for containers on a sunny balcony

Denise--

We have a large south facing balcony near Talavera, about 100 km west of
Madrid. Summers are long and scorchingly hot. We experimented for
several years with geraniums and petunias. Very colourful and fairly
easy but too high in maintenance for us: Both need replanting every year
to look good, and geraniums are prone to attacks by a new white
butterfly plague. Also we made the mistake which Sean pointed out - we
used smallish containers which dried out too fast.

Now we have a row of large oil drums cut in half. We painted them and
lined the jagged edges with the special rubber strips used for car
bodywork. Then we planted them up with a collection of oleanders. The
result is spectacular. The hotter it gets the more they seem to like it,
they flower all summer, only need watering about twice a week and
pruning once a year.
