Hi everybody,
For those deprived of opportunities to reach California sunshine, small
respite is at hand, the Medieval Garden in Assisi is holding a herb
weekend on the 12th 13th October. I went to the last one and was knocked
out by the range of wild flowers and herbs growing wild around the town
and the standards of catering for the delegates. Also the view from the
gents (ie rest room in American,I believe)in the basilica is definitely
the most spectacular of any loo on Earth. Never one for false modesty, I
can tell you that I am scheduled to do two talks (i) Vegetable poisons
from ancient Greece to the Borgias and (ii) Golden Hedges and bejewelled
castles, which is about the role of fantasy in hard landscaping in the
last two thousand years. Do come, it would be nice to meet you all. The
weekend is run by Marisa Cohen who may be reached at edet@assisinc.ch
and the profits will go to sticking the town back together after the
earthquake. I know its stale news now and we never hear of it anymore,
but last time I was there, there were no children on the streets, it was
like a ghost town, most of the population had been shipped out to
somewhat squalid temporary accommodation on the plain below, so there is
still lots to be done that the tourist board doesn't tell you about and
which tourists never see anyway.
On yellow asphodels, yes splendid plants, they even survived the wettest
English winter on record in our horrible clay. Only thing wrong with
them is that the flowers don't open until the afternoon, so if you use
them in a display, they wil probably still be asleep when the judges
come round
