According to _Selected Plants for Southern California Gardens_, it has few
flowers in the coastal area because it is too cool. A comment from the San
Fernando Valley says that "If you water it after letting it dry out in
summer, it will bloom within the week."

Odd this plant in the figwort family isn't more common in California, looks
as though it is indeed quite drought tolerant. Maybe it needs more heat,
anyone out there know?
