Leucophyllum and Dalea notes

A coupella notes:

1) Although some forms have noticeably well-colored
flowers, most bushes that I've seen of this haven't
been what some of us would call "colorful" -- no
matter near the coast or with interior heat. The
flowers are near white through lilac blue to maybe
lavender. So, those that I've seen near the coast
(there's some beauties near Mission Bay in San Diego)
are "as colorful" as any others I've seen. I suppose
there are some deep "blue" selections in Texas
nurseries.

2) I have a theory: there are species of Opuntia
along the So. Cali. coast and sister species in the
deserts. It's not the "heat and dryness and monsoons"
that have created the parallel but, rather, the salt
in the air that favors the Opuntia
physiology/morphology. Could the same be true of
Dalea?

I have seen attempts at growing Dalea in the many hot
interior (not desert) valleys of So. Cal. with no
success, even though one would think the heat and
drought would be to their liking. Yet, I have also
seen a few Daleas along the coast (Nan Sterman, too,
mentions her success) doing "okay".

Am I onto something? Or am I just on something?
Please smack me around. Noble Prize, here I come...

Joe
