Actually, drainage below the upper couple of feet isn't of much use in a
region with perhumid winters and heavy soils!  I'd quit after knocking
in gaps on each wall.   If terrain permits, you
could gain the same drainage by building up raised beds over it.  And
you'd be able
to claim on sale that you have an "in-ground swimming pool".........

Alternatively, fill to a couple of feet from the top with builders sand,
and end with sand/compost mix, and make a bog garden, with the likes of
iris, primroses, Gunnera... With the lack of darainage and tree roots,
verdant vegetation can thrive on much less water than you'd think.
