As well as a retired university organic chemistry professor,
I have also been an archaeologist, limited to surface explorations. I
was hired as the preliminary consultant to a project in Arroyo
Grande. It was on the crown of a hill and was a known archaological
site. Part of the problem was an existing swimming pool. While the
local building department probably would not have opposed removal of
the pool, I proposed an alternative to protect the remains of the
site. I suggested they simply knock holes in the bottom of the pool
for drainage and then fill it in with imported soil. They did this
and the project was built leaving the major portion of the pool
buried, intact.
So, my suggestions is to knock holes in the bottom of the
pool and leave it there. You do not specify how much of a "lip" the
pool has but one could remove a little of it (not very deep) or even
make use of it as the foundation for a greenhouse or other "amenity".
