swimming pool conversion

My daughter and son-in-law just bought a very modest house in a very modest
neighborhood in Portland, OR. It has a swimming pool which they were, in no
way, looking for. They would like, when they have the money, to fill it for
a garden area. Demolishing completely would be the first choice but they
doubt they'd ever be able to afford to do that.

Does anyone have experience or knowledge about this kind of thing? I'd much
appreciate being able to give them some information.
