Hi Mark, Tim et al.
Picking up on what Mark is saying about Schefflera digitata, I recall a
conversation with a fellow from a company called New Zealand Tree Seeds
www.nzseeds.co.nz
and he reckoned that they were collecting seed from plants that were =
growing at the edge of it's range where frosts of -9C were not unheard =
of. With shaking hands I immediatelty emailed an order for a large =
batch of seed and with my usual skill and expertise promptly fried all =
the resultant seedlings. They claim to source all their collections =
from the nastiest provenances, incidentally, and were talking of seeds =
taken form plants such as Cordyline banksii for example that were =
growing in regions exposed to -13C (either that or he saw me coming and =
had the story ready and waiting). Interesting, and a shame that I was =
unable to keep anything alive from that order except a few stragglers =
here and there.
I have no ties with this company, BTW.
Did anyone mention Pseudopanax arboreus? probably as it is fairly =
commonly grown, but I love its big toothy leaves and it has proved to be =
quite tough here so far over about 4 yrs showing no damage at all to =
cold. Seems to me the aralias are one of the richest families in the =
plant world for foliage interest, wish I knew more of them.
regards to all
