Subject: Re: Vallea-dictory
The more I learn about this plant
the more intrigued I am! I've just read in
a book that it's a member of
the Eleocarpaceae (sp?), in other words the same
family that's given us
Crinodendron hookerianum. Fairly obviously, to me at
any rate, it's a very
different kettle of flower and growth-habit.
Einion Hughes,
Intrigued?, blimey you should compare Vallea to
Elaeocarpus dentatus (NZ), which I recently saw at Tregrehan Gardens
(Cornwall), I think 'mystified' as to its relationship with other genera would
be more apt, if the growth habit is anything to go on.
Mabberly in "The Plant Book" ( accord' my beat-up
1990 ed.) seems to leave the impression that Eleaocarpaceae isn't the
easiest botanical family to describe with suggested alliances to Tiliaceae,
and Flacoutiaceae (Cronquist), which I believe contains Azara also from South
America.
