Embothrium flowers at last!

I can hardly believe it! First flower buds on my Embothrium
coccineum lanceolatum 'Norquinco' that I imported from Hilliers
Nursery in England about 1970.

If I had had a smaller garden, it would have been composted long ago.
Friends whose seedling embothriums have flowered profusely from youth
have made suggestions, principally MORE SUN! It is somewhat shaded
by a couple of big arbutus (A. menziesii), but the Moroccan broom,
Cytisus battandieri, right next to it, has been flowering well for
decades. So I just ignored it.

Anyway, it has decided to bloom. Who can guess why? I'll just enjoy
it. And if the colour of the flowers isn't as intense as those of my
friends' plants, shall I rip it out finally after 32 years? I should
know in just a few days, when the buds open.
