An interresting point, David and I don't recall picking up on your 
question in the past, but it makes me think of a native plant 
landscaper here in the San Diego area.  This guy claims that he uses 
overhead spray on his natives, several times over the summer not as a 
way of getting water to plant roots, but rather to wet down the 
leaves.  He says that his plants absolutely thrive when he does it --

I have no idea if he has done any research on teh topic but he is a 
disciple of the man who runs Las Pilitas nursery (whose name I can't 
recall at the moment).  Perhaps the idea came from him and he has 
done some research in this area.  Have you looked at the Las Pilitas 
website?
