Dear Medit folks. I have 2 plants of concern in my nursery, which is
in the San Fransisco Bay Area. One is Melia azederach and the other
Retama ( Genista)monosperma that I am considering not
selling.( Have not sold them yet.) I got the idea for the Melia from
seeing it in the front yard of a neighbor. So pretty and fragrant! I saw
on the web that it is invasive in various locals, and asked the neighbor if she
ever got any seedlings. ( She hadn't) . Asked around some more and folks I
talked to thought it was fine to grow here, as long as it came with a warning
not to plant next to a wild area. . Now I have someone requesting I get rid of
it- as the birds will eat the seeds and drop them somewhere else where it could
be invasive. What do you all think?
Also , I read that the Retama is very invasive in Southern California . Is
it as invasive here? There is a nice one growing at Strybing Botanical Garden in
San Francisco. What about (potentially invasive somwhere ) trees
planted in dense urban environments like SF ?
Please no hate mail, just some honest and informed
opinions .
