Trevor,
I have planted it out here in cool maritime influenced
Berkeley, Ca in both full sun and as a container plant
in bright shade. It seems to handle both situations
equally well, but is certainly more lush and larger
growing with more water and less sun. As a hot day
here is mild compared to most of Australia, full sun
is not baking or all that dry,(we stay fairly humid in
summer and get frequent overcast from almost daily
fog/low clouds here May through September, and have
cool mornings/evenings/55F with daily highs usually
below 75F; perfect gardening weather!) It is rather
frost sensitive, and should be protected from more
than a degree or two of frost.
A very nice landscape or specimen container plant, and
I would counsel more shade and water based on my
experience, but have not seen it in habitat in the
Canary Islands to know if it prefers similar
conditions there. I suspect it grows in partly shaded
evergreen forest margins with more fog/low cloud
precipitation to supplement the long dry summers, and
is used to cooler conditions from growing at fairly
high altitude. It seems to like the same
temperature/moisture regimen as Echium wildprettii,
but will tolerate more shade.
