I was hoping to hear from others on the vagaries of potting soil mix. I grow mostly rock garden plants in a very lean mix, but I suspect my mix tends to the overly lean side, and have been wanting to explore other mixes. Interestingly, similiarly to Janet, I have also been using OSH products. I use their cheapest Potting Soil, and dilute it down with lots of perlite and sand. We have lots and lots of feedstores here in the Sierra Foothills, but absolutely none of them can get pure granite grit with salt anymore. So I use perlite. At least it makes the pots light. The "floating up" tendency of perlite is not so much a problem for me because I top all my pots off with grit or a coarse sand.
