want to fill the bottom half with something much lighter than rocks, and to
that end have collected some packing pellets from work: some pink s shapes
and white pellets. Does anyone know if these will harm my citrus? The
whites dissolve in water, so won't be particularly useful, but how do I tell
if the pinks are poisonous?

Carol:
The white ones that shrink in humidity are some form of biodegradable non
food-grade starch. The others are either polystyrene foam or polyurethane
foam, not particularly biodegradable. I don't think they will leach out
more than plasticizers, which don't appeal to me, since these compounds can
be pseudoestrogens like dialkyl phthalates.
I wouldn't want to eat fruit from plants with these items in the soil.
