Moira, I know what
you mean about not being able to do all in the garden any longer, I am young at
heart but not so young in body. The young man I have working for me now is
trying to learn and is curious, so over time I am explaining the differences
between the various plants. I find he is good for the heavy stuff and we
are now redoing the pathway at the top of my herb garden and he is really
enjoying the before and after. Our property is along a river and we have
an abundance of somewhat smooth granite rocks and boulders of various sizes
and I harvest them to utilize for retaining walls, and lining paths
and beds. The young man and I just put in a rip rap lined stairway and
rock lined gravel path up to the top of the herb garden where the arbor is
located - and he remarked he couldn't quite figure out what I had in mind when
we started and said he had his doubts it would work and then afterwards he
said he was amazed at how that type of stairway could be constructed. I
now see him standing back and admiring his work as it progresses and I think he
is beginning to appreciate the rewards of the hard work. I really
enjoy sharing my love of plants and gardening with others and I try to encourage
this in any that work here even if they are only here for a
brief time. I did have a woman working here and she knew her plants
but she is undependable and if she doesn't show up the weeds keep growing and I
get behind in all my garden projects. I still do a good deal in the garden
but my back isn't as strong as it used to be so I have to be very careful about
pulling weeds.
Well, I am so glad to have chosen the hardier of
the two Pandorea, since I had taken out the hardenbergia for its intolerance to
the freeze. Of course, this past winter was an unusual one but I am liking
the way this Pandorea is clinging closer to the post. Of course this may
not be the case over time, but it does look like it would take to some shearing
if it gets too wide. I am really wanting to cover more of the top of the
arbor, rather than the sides so I have placed the two on alternate corners of
the arbor.
Good luck to you Carol with your vine's recovery,
unexpected garden events are really hard to deal with.
Linda
