Re: Pyracantha with no flowers or berries

Dear Karrie,

I think you may be correct about this particular plant being infertile, judging from the growth of this plant I think it will never get berries.  I have waited three years to see if it was just late in developing but now I am thinking it will never get flowers or berries.  Too bad it isn't without thorns instead of being without berries.  Its branches are nice and healthy but alas no berries.  It is the last one in a row - I am sorry it isn't planted between the two with berries.  Then I could weave the berried branches through the one without.  This goes to show when purchasing plants for their berries - to purchase them at the time of year when they have the berries to be sure you get one with berries.  I did do this but at the time there were only three plants of the same type at the nursery I was at, two with berries and one without - so I got the three, and, of course, I thought it would get berries another year.  I wonder how often this happens in plant propagation?

My guess would be the third one was clonally propagated from different stock, possibly from a portion of a plant that was either infertile or juvenile-which would mean it may take longer to develop branches mature enough to fruit and flower.

I have three Pyracantha purchased and planted at the same time from one gallon pots.  Two plants get orange berries and one has never gotten any flowers or berries.  The one without the berries has grown the largest.  They are planted near one another along a fence line.  Any thoughts about why one would not flower or get berries?  They have been in the ground for three years and are all over six feet tall now.  Thanks in advance.
