Re: Pyracantha with no flowers or berries

Hey, Charles, I had to look it up 'cause I didn't know either, but it still didn't answer my question of why this one didn't have any berries.  And now it is so large, I am not going to replace it - it screens the solid fence like I want it to, it would just be nice to have three with berries instead of two.  The robins really like those berries in the fall and I have a picture of a robin sitting in the branches and the color of the robin's breast is the same color as the berries - great camoflauge for the robin.

Just a thought.

What do I know, I'm into bromeliads and caudiciforms. ---Chas---

Dear Charles,

Pyracantha is supposed to be hermaphrodite - male and female flowers on the same plant.  The one which does not have berries also does not flower so I am assuming the other two have both male and female flowers on the same plant.  When I bought them I made sure they all were supposed to have orange berries because I didn't want red berries in that location.

I don't suppose you have a problem of monoeciousosity do you?

Any chance the big ugly one is a male?    ---Chas---

I have three Pyracantha purchased and planted at the same time from one gallon pots.  Two plants get orange berries and one has never gotten any flowers or berries.  The one without the berries has grown the largest.  They are planted near one another along a fence line.  Any thoughts about why one would not flower or get berries?  They have been in the ground for three years and are all over six feet tall now.  Thanks in advance.
