If this is an asteriscus, it would be Asteriscus sericeus

Very dry growing, stems are slightly woody, leaves have the texture of velvet.

Reseeds a bit in my garden. One of my favorites.

Hi Ken -

The plant you mentioned (I've uploaded your attached photo to the web here):

seems to be an Asteriscus, possibly A. maritimus, which is perhaps a more common species. It is interesting to note your experience with it - yes, I would agree that this would suggest it as a worthy plant. We have the species above available to us in the horticultural trade (California), but I had not had the opportunity to really test it out. It looks like a very useful plant!

Hi Sean

I was about to send this picture of an unidentified plant to members of the MGS and found when checking your note of last year I should use a picture server. Not knowing how to do that I am sending it to you in the hope you might be able to name it. It has popped up in an undeveloped part of the new garden in sandy rubble. It is 20cm high and a shade more across. The tight button-like yellow flowers are 1cm across. Whilst nearly all herbaceous vegetation here turned a crisp brown some time ago this plant stands out like a beacon, and is possibly worthy of growing in the dry area I am developing which is outside the irrigation system. I shall attempt to germinate some seed but would like to know the name of it so that I can find out more about it. It does not feature in a book I have of the island's flora. I hope you can help.
