Hi Jan,
Thanks for the tip! 'Goodwin Creek Gray' is still pretty big, though. I occasionally see a smaller lavender, possibly 'Hidcote Blue', but my experience with that back on the east coast was that it bloomed for about a month and that was it: maybe here it will bloom longer. Have you ever grown Lavandula 'Provence'? That looks like a winner in photos, not sure about in the flesh. Regarding size, my L. heterophylla is huge on the berm with rosemary and toyon, and it's huge in the border with iceberg roses and sea statice, though it lives longer on the dry berm.
By the way, I loved the pictures of your garden on the bewaterwise website! I don't know why
Mediterranean style gardens aren't more popular in California. The climate is mediterranean, and Spanish architecture is ubiquitous, but a garden arranged around linear axes, defined by hedge, pergola, and parterre, is very rare.
I'm slowly moving our own garden in that direction, and hope someday to post pictures. Still way too much lawn, though. I keep telling my partner they're the horticultural equivalent of driving a Hummer, but he likes a greensward. I persuaded him to let me experiment with a lawn of Dymondia in our small side yard: if it works, the Marathon will slowly be gnawed away until only the parking strip and a smallish back lawn are left.
Hope to see you at the next MGS meeting.
