Pam -
I believe this is Fallopia (formerly Polygonum) aubertii, or possibly F. baldschuanica. The former has been around in local gardens for a long time and is from Eastern China and the latter, possibly of more recent introduction, is from Middle Asia (Tajikistan), Afghanistan, Pakistan. They are apparently very confused in the horticultural trade and are often offered under each other's names. The flowers in both are airy white panicles - more or less erect in F. aubertii, larger but drooping in F. baldschuanica. One or both are listed as invasive in some areas, noting as escaped ornamentals in California (Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Solano, Sacramento, Sonoma, Glen, and Siskiyou counties). Not surprisingly, it has earned the common name of 'mile a minute vine' as well as silver lace vine, fleece vine, Russian vine. Tough and easy, but rampant and possibly invasive.

Sean-
Thanks for the instructions! They worked. I asked a master gardener from Sonoma, andÂit may be possible that one of the group misspoke or took a really wild guess re: this vine. After all, we are supposed to be iin a Med. environment, and she said buckwheat family plants don't really grow well in CA. Hope this photo helps. I may even give Betsy a call on the rare possiblity that she recalls what it is, or knows someone who does know.
Thanks and good luck!
