After all, we are supposed to be iin a Med. environment, and she said buckwheat family plants don't really grow well in CA.
I just wanted to comment on this. I don't know if we can really broadbrush the entire buckwheat family like that as along the coast and even into the interior Buckwheats (eriogonum) are a very prominent and important group of plants in the native flora. The online pages for Jepson show about 20 something different genera of Polygonaceae.
