I have the variety with bristly calyxes and smaller leaves, but both varieties of it do VERY well here around Monterey Bay. I grow it in what's basically mostly sand (town sits on old sand dunes) and it REALLY likes where it is. Enough so that it's trying to send up new colonies several feet away from the plant. The main plant is also enormous. Flowering stems this year are about 8 feet tall. If the soil were moister or if I let it, the thing would likely form a very large colony.
It also grows very well right next to Monterey's harbor as well, and they have several plants. It really isn't a fussy plant for us, unless it doesn't get enough water for a good start. I've got some smaller plants that haven't grown much because I didn't water them enough when I first planted them, but I've been giving them more water and they seem to be responding well.
