I've heard that this spot get less rain (actually falling directly
on it) that any other north of Los Angeles!

Certainly, you must take the time to try and visit Heronswood
Nursery in Kingston (across Puget Sound from Seattle)! Dan Hinkley
has extensive demonstration gardens devoted to his amazing
collection of unusual plants he lists in his (almost 300 page!)
catalog. You'll need to call ahead to be able to visit
(360-297-4172) but don't expect a guided tour - these folks are REAL
BUSY sending out plants throughout the country.

I visited a number of years back, prepared with a good-sized list of
stuff I wanted to be sure and see first-hand. After stepping into
the garden my mind got sort of mushy and stupid as I saw all sorts
of other plants I had no idea existed!!! I just sort of walked
around in a daze for a few hours until my (non-plant-addict) wife
pulled me away so we could leave (I'd probably still be up there
wandering in his woods today!). The address is 7530 NE 288th
Street, Kingston, WA 98346-9502. When you call, leave your e-mail
address as well - Dan may be able to respond to you if he is around
(he is often traveling in foreign parts looking for new plants). He
may remember my name, so feel free to mention me.

For those of you interested in seeing his catalog (a must, even if
you never order - very informative and entertaining!), send $4 along
to the address above.
