Dear Hank, hope this isn't too late for your trip. Sequim itself is
pretty awful, but the countryside around is fabulous and accessible.
There is a nice walk down to the Spit on the Straits of Juan de Fuca;
last time we were there we saw a bald eagle, and there are usually
interesting shore birds and sea shells. On the road to Hurricane Ridge
in the Olympic Mts., right in the back yard of Pt. Angeles, you can
often see mountain goats and get right above timerline for some lovely
short walks through meadows. Past Pt. Angeles at Crescent Lake, there's
a road up to the Soleduck Hot Spring trail. Terrific forest walk with a
(sometimes) nude hotspring on the way. The road continues through the
mountains and includes a beautiful waterfall walk whose name I can't
remember. We enjoy taking my mother-in-law over to Victoria on the ferry
from Port Angeles, having tea, seeing the wonderful Provincial Museum
there, even seeing Butchart Gardens, the despair of real plants people.
Don't let anyone tempt you to visit the Olympic Wildlife Park in Sequim;
very sad-looking animals mostly in concrete and metal cages. The Three
Crabs restaurant in Sequim is nice. R e a l l y lovely but with city
prices is Ce Si Bon between Sequim and Pt. Angeles. Port Townsend is
the only pretty town up there, about half an hour from Sequim. I've
heard the Blodell Reserve is beautiful - seen pictures of mossy walks,
never been there. Have a good time!
