Pawpaws - papaya

Australia is the land of plenty and I have eaten pawpaws since I was a
child, mostly in fruit salad. The seed is supposed to be very good for
constipation. Pawpaws are used to make a meat tenderiser. It is often
used in fruit salad in Australia. Another nice way of preparing it is to
set jelly (jello) in the hollow bit and then slice it.

In my self sufficiency phase I grew a very small pawpaw from South America
which would take the cold and still fruit. It was purely only novelty
value, though it did fruit, and was a passing phase so that I can't even
remember its name. Pawpaws fruit in Sydney and points north but commercial
plantings are particularly from Brisbane area north.

I came across cherimoyas in Chile where an area specialised in them, but I
don't think they have ever achieved common status in Australia. Are
cherimoyas the same as "custard apples" which I also knew as a child?

I can't believe that Harry Dewey has a corner of his yard where he hasn't
looked since the 1970's. How big is the yard???

Sue Templeton, Albury, inland Australia. where minus 1 and 2 frosts are
