Re: Aleppo pines

P. radiata is only pest ridden and noisome ( unhealthful and foul smelling?
I think not ; ) ) because it is unsused to some of the diseases brought
over from back east. You say you live in oakland? Hmm well Pitch canker
fungus is responsible for the decline of these trees. And theyre not really
antive to all of california. Mostly to a small grove in Santa Cruz, on the
mountains above Monterey, a few near Cambria and some on the Guadalupe
islands off of Baja. The Monterey Pines ( P. Radiata) that are grown in
nurseries are usually types imported from New Zealand and they all have a
dead straight trunk ( good for lumber) and are genetically different than the
true natives. In they are better on the windier and cooler coasts than in
hotter more inland areas.According to sunset it is not the best pine for
cities bacause it does not tolerate smog well. It is better in small towns
and along the coast where smog and car exhaust can be blown away instead of
sitting around . IMHO it is one of the most beautiful pines and it is useful
for us near its native areas.
