Hi Sean - and Andrew,

We can't help you directly, but NZ has what appears to be a very similar
problem with Pinus contorta, the Lodgepole Pine, and there is an active
campaign to eradicate it. The only effective ways discovered here are
manpower-hungry, but there are small armies of volounteers working on
it, and effective techniques have been developed.

There is a detailed article about this campaign in the May 1997 issue of
the NZ publication "Forest & Bird". The F&B organisation is working in
concert with our Department of Conservation on the problem. Their work
may be of help to you, if the species are similar (I know nothing about
the Aleppo Pine).

Forest & Bird's office email address is:

         office@wn.forest-bird.org.nz

and there is also a web site at:

         http://www.nzwwa.com/conserve/treebird/treebird.htm

I hope this may be of some assistance.
