I have a couple of mature P. radiata specimens in my garden (left over from
when the land was used as a timber plantation forest). I can see that the
form of the hybrids has certainly changed over the last 50 or so years in
this country by comparing their form to the more recent plantings. However,
they still seem to have a lot of branches, its just that all the lower
branches get pruned off at an early age (10 - 12 years I think) to give a
clear trunk for the highest value knot-free timber.
Does anyone know how long they are capable of living?
